What is an after-school or weekend enrichment program?
You're probably already familiar with some form of after school or weekend enrichment. Many students are enrolled in athletics, art classes, music classes, etc. These programs all generally referred to as extra-curricular programs. If your child is performing significantly above grade level, you might want to consider the possibility of an academically-based *enrichment* program. The admissions requirements and curriculum varies significantly from one program to another.
What purpose does an after-school or weekend enrichment program serve?
After school enrichment programs allot gifted students the opportunity to study topics with higher levels of interest and challenge. These programs help to re-ignite a gifted student's passion for learning. Enrichment programs that provide gifted students with an appropriate challenge provide a much-needed opportunity to learn how to conquer challenges, a skill set that gifted students do not often gain in regular classrooms. In addition, after school and weekend enrichment programs provide students with the opportunity to meet intellectual peers with similar interests.
Where can I find an after-school or weekend enrichment center?
HEROES Academy offers weekend accelerated classes for students ages 6 and up in math, language arts, and STEM. All classes at HEROES Academy focus on developing problem solving and critical thinking skills. Unlike many academic programs, HEROES places students in classes based on their tested math and reading ability rather than age or grade level in school. This allows each student to be appropriately challenged in the classroom. For more information on classes at HEROES Academy, visit www.njgifted.org/courses.html
