Middlesex County

Accelerated Math

  • Math placement in 6th grade determines if a student takes Algebra in 7th or 8th grade.  Click here for details.

According to the student handbook, Dunellen Public Schools’ offers a ” pull-out program for one period a week to select students in grades one through five who qualify through testing and multiple criteria. Students pursue learning activities that further develop interests and apply previously learned skills. Workingindividuallyandinsmallgroups,studentsexploretopics,problems,anddevelop demonstrations to gain a deeper understanding of concepts and develop their abilities to become sophisticated solvers of problems in the subject areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, and 21st Century Life and Career Skills.”

  • Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade who are NEW to Edison Public Schools take the CogAT in October.  Students who missed testing in 2nd or 4th grade also take the CogAT at this time. 
  • In November, these families are notified of test results, eligibility for gifted and talented services, and the start date for gifted and talented programming (if applicable).
  • In March, 2nd and 4th grade students (except those already in GT or who tested in Fall) take the CogAT.
  • These families receive notification in May/June.

  • South Brunswick has four high school math levels:  Elements, Traditional (standard track), Advanced, Honors and AP.  AP level students may take AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC and/or AP Statistics.

Gifted and Talented

  • Howell Township schools identifies gifted and talented students in Kindergarten and up.  
  • (Project Explore) Kindergarten and First Grade Gifted and Talented Students are Identified using scores from standardized testing and a teacher observation inventory.
  • (Project ECG) Students in second through fifth grade are identified using multiple measures including: standardized test scores in the 90th percentile or higher, high academic performance, and/or advanced intellectual or creative abilities 
  • (Project GOAL; Project PLUS) Students in fourth through eighth grade are identified using multiple measures which may include:  standardized test scores in the 90th percentile or higher, demonstrated giftedness on an aptitude test (such as an IQ test), advanced academic performance, and/or demonstrated advanced intellectual or creative abilities.

Gifted and Talented 

  • Placement in Marlboro Township’s Gifted and Talented program begins in Kindergarten.  Placement is determined by multiple measures including:
  • Marlboro Township offers separate Gifted Reading and Gifted Mathematics programs for students in Kindergarten through third grade.  In addition, Marlboro offers an enrichment program for grades 2 and 3.
  • REACH programming is offered for fourth and fifth grade.  REACH is a pull out enrichment program.
  • SOAR programming is available for students in Kindergarten through fifth grade.
