Definitions by State
Gifted education varies widely across the nation. Each state defines giftedness in their own way, and this definitions has the power to shape the programs and resources offered in the area. Some states classify giftedness as a subset of special education whereas others explicitly exclude it from special education.
Red States do not have a state definition for gifted outlined in their legislature.
Orange states have a state definition for gifted outlined in their legislature.
Green states have a state definition for gifted outlined in their legislature establishing a gifted students’ need for services.
